How we research the country driving guides and articles on Plan Your Road Trips, what the dates on each page mean, and how to tell us when something is wrong.
Who writes the guides
Guides and articles are published by the Plan Your Road Trips team, a small UK company. We credit the team rather than named writers. We use AI tools to help research and draft some content, and we say below which content has been checked by hand.
Country driving guides
The country driving guides come in two kinds, and each page says which kind it is.
- Hand-checked guides (32 countries, all in Europe). Each rule is checked against official sources: gov.uk travel advice and the country's own road authority or government sites. Most rules link to their source. Speed limits, tolls and fuel prices come from national sources and carry their own dates. The page shows the date we last checked it.
- Other countries. These were researched in bulk with AI-assisted tools and have not been checked by hand. The page says so, shows no review date, and links to gov.uk travel advice so you can confirm the rules.
Where visitors can't drive themselves, for example where the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel, the guide says so. We don't offer to plan a trip there, and we keep the page out of search results.
The guides are a summary, not legal advice. Rules change. Check the official source before you travel.
Articles
Articles are longer reads on routes, countries and driving. Where an article covers the same country as a driving guide, the guide is the short checklist and the article is the in-depth read, and each links to the other. When the two cover the same rule, we keep them in agreement.
What the dates mean
- Last checked on a country guide is the date we last checked its rules against the sources. We only change it when we check the guide again.
- Updated on an article is the date of the last real change to the text, with a note of what changed. Republishing, design changes and spelling fixes don't change it. Articles with no recorded change show no date.
- Prices such as fuel and tolls show the month they apply to.
Distances, times and other figures
Distances, drive times and heights are calculated from public map and elevation data, not typed in by hand. Fuel and toll costs are estimates, and the page says so. The full list of data sources is on our about page.
How to report an error
If a rule has changed, a price is out of date or something is simply wrong, tell us. Email [email protected] or use the feedback form. Say which page and what is wrong, with a link to the official source if you have one. When we correct a guide, its "Last checked" date changes. When we correct an article, the change is noted under its byline.
