Who we are
Plan Your Road Trips (PYRT) is a small, independent company based in the United Kingdom, started in December 2025 by Anthony Key. Anthony builds the planner, the iPhone and Android apps and the guides on this site, and plans his own trips with them.
The biggest so far was 3,299 km over 15 days through six countries: from the UK through France and Belgium, into Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and over the Grossglockner (2,504 m at the Hochtor), the Furka and the Grimsel. Closer to home he has driven Glencoe, Skye and Glenfinnan in the Scottish Highlands. A lot of what the app does came from those drives: sending a whole day of stops to Google Maps, recording the road you actually took, and collecting the passes on the way.
What we make
- A free day-by-day trip planner on the web.
- The PYRT app for iPhone and Android, which records your drives.
- 26 famous road trips and 144 city-to-city drives, with distances measured along the road.
- Driving guides by country for UK drivers going abroad.
Where our numbers come from
Every distance, time and height on the site is computed from public data, not typed in by hand. When a figure is an estimate, the page says so.
- Drive times and distances
- OpenStreetMap road data, routed with OSRM and OpenRouteService, measured along the road rather than in a straight line
- Heights and climbing
- Open-Meteo and OpenTopoData elevation models, sampled along each route
- Towns and cities
- GeoNames (CC BY 4.0)
- Photos of places
- Wikimedia Commons, credited on every page they appear
- Driving rules abroad
- gov.uk travel advice and each country's own road authority, linked from the country guides
- Fuel and toll estimates
- published national averages, shown as estimates; we say so wherever they appear
