It holds prominent positions in industries such as steel, cement, glass, auto parts, and brewing. The city's economic success has been partly attributed to its proximity to the United States-Mexico border and strong economic ties with the United States.

At the educational level, it is home to the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, the largest private university in Mexico and one of the best ranked in the world.
