TEMPORE SYNDICATUS CLARISS(IMI) DOMINI ANTONII BARBARO DIGNISIMI CONSILIARII NAUPLII ROMANIE DIE PRIMA APRILIS MDXXXIII
The inscription, dated 1 April 1533, commemorates the appointment of Zuan [i.e., Giovanni] Antonio Barbaro of Nauplia as the Venetian syndicus of Aegina. In the summer of 1533, shortly after completing his duties on Aegina and while on his way back to Nauplia, Barbaro was kidnapped and tortured by Turkish pirates. He was freed from the pirates by a Turkish officer but remained a prisoner on the island of Chios and died in captivity in July or August of that year, leaving a wife and five small children.
