Full driving licence + 1968 IDP recommended
UK photocard licence is accepted for short visits, but a 1968 Vienna Convention International Driving Permit is widely recommended as Kosovo is not a party to either convention and police may demand one.
Passport with 3 months validity
UK and EU passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond date of departure; visa-free stay up to 90 days in any 180.
Vehicle registration (V5C) and ownership proof
Carry the original V5C logbook; if the car is not in your name, bring a notarised letter of authorisation from the registered keeper.
Buy local border insurance: Green Card not valid
Kosovo is NOT in the Green Card system, so UK and most EU policies do not cover it; you must buy short-term third-party insurance at the border, typically EUR 15-30 for 15 days.
Mandatory in-car equipment
You must carry a warning triangle, hi-vis vest, first aid kit, spare bulb set, and a tow rope; spot fines apply for missing items.
Winter tyres 15 Nov – 15 Mar
Winter tyres are compulsory in the cold season and snow chains must be carried when signposted, particularly on mountain routes to Prizren and Brezovica.
Headlamp beam deflectors
Driving is on the right, so RHD UK cars need beam deflector stickers to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.
Speed limits 130 / 80 / 50 km/h
Motorway 130 km/h, open road 80 km/h, urban 50 km/h; speed cameras are increasing and fines are payable on the spot in EUR.
Zero-tolerance alcohol limit
BAC limit is 0.05 g/L for experienced drivers and 0.00 g/L for drivers with less than 3 years' experience or professional drivers: easier to simply not drink.
Dipped headlights on at all times
Daytime running lights or dipped headlights are mandatory year-round, day and night; seatbelts compulsory front and rear.

FCDO advises caution near Jarinje and Brnjak crossings due to occasional tensions; if entering from Serbia, note that Serbia may not recognise a Kosovo entry stamp as legal entry: exit via the same border or a third country.
Kosovo unilaterally uses the EUR despite not being in the Eurozone; cash is king outside Pristina, and ATMs are widely available in towns.
Petrol and diesel are cheaper than the EU average; most stations are attended, card payment is accepted in cities, and rounding up the change is the norm for tipping.
Amounts of EUR 10,000 or equivalent must be declared at the border on entry and exit.
Dial 112 for all emergencies; 192 for police and 193 for fire are also active. Road assistance is limited outside Pristina, so consider European breakdown cover that explicitly lists Kosovo.
Pristina and other cities currently have no LEZ or environmental sticker scheme. No Umweltplakette equivalent required.
