Local Tongan driving permit required
Foreign licences are not directly valid: visitors must convert their UK/EU licence to a Tongan permit at the Ministry of Infrastructure in Nuku'alofa for around TOP 30 (about EUR 12). Bring passport and home licence.

Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua are reached only by ferry (MV 'Otuanga'ofa) or domestic flight. You cannot drive between island groups.
Petrol costs around TOP 3.30 per litre (roughly EUR 1.25). Cash is king outside Nuku'alofa; cards are accepted only at major hotels and a few supermarkets.
Amounts above TOP 10,000 (about EUR 3,800) must be declared at customs on arrival or departure.
