UK photocard or EU licence is accepted for visits; no IDP required for UK or EU drivers. Carry the licence at all times.
Vehicle insurance and V5C
Carry proof of motor insurance and your V5C (logbook) or rental agreement. UK Green Card no longer required since August 2021.
Warning triangle and hi-vis vest
A warning triangle is mandatory in every vehicle, and a hi-vis vest must be worn by anyone exiting the car on a motorway or main road shoulder.
Speed limits
Motorway 130 km/h (reduced to 110 km/h in rain), rural roads 90 km/h, urban areas 50 km/h. A 90 km/h motorway cap applies around Luxembourg City.
Alcohol limit 0.5 g/L
BAC limit is 0.5 g/L for experienced drivers and 0.2 g/L for novice (under 2 years) and professional drivers. Penalties are strict.
Dipped headlights and phone rules
Dipped headlights are mandatory at night, in tunnels and in poor visibility. Handheld mobile phone use while driving is banned; hands-free only.
Drive on the right
Traffic drives on the right and overtakes on the left. Give way to traffic coming from the right at unmarked junctions.
Winter tyres in wintry conditions
Winter tyres (M+S or 3PMSF) are legally required whenever roads are icy, snow-covered or slushy, regardless of date. Fines apply for non-compliance.
