Santa Maria Capua Vetere is a town and comune in the province of Caserta, in the region of Campania, southern Italy. Although not identical with the ancient Civitas Capuana, the town developed during the medieval period near the site of the Roman amphitheatre. Its name was later changed to Santa Maria Capua Vetere—with Capua Vetere meaning "Old Capua"—to reflect its historical association with the ancient city.
